The concept for this garden is that there is a huge space at the back this country house and the family who owned it wanted to make better use of it for entertaining friends and for their children. We created a unique raised lawn, with a walled sandstone patio that also has many creative features.
They have the normal patio at the back of the house, and from there they have stepping stones to a circular patio that they will add a table and chairs too. It is perfect for entertaining friends or for sitting having coffee on a summerâs morning.
It is all planting along the side of the garden. This helps to add by colour and fragrance to the garden.
We have used a very new concept here in a rubber kerb which is 100 per cent recycled from tyres. Firstly, it is recycled material, it doesnât blow away and finally it holds its colour. There is zinc in the rubber and that will leak out into the beds which will help the plants grow and keep them green. We sell it in the garden centre and think it works really well in our landscaping projects.
At the back of the paving and gravel you can see there is a wall with steps up into a raised garden, when it is finished this will be a lovely lawn. We will have a hedge to break your eye between the lawn and the garden.
For the raised lawn we needed to bring tons of top soil in to create the effect. But the result turned out perfect!
The patio is made from Indian sandstone which is called mint. It also has some fossils running through it and it is nice and colourful and bright. The actual house is built with sandstone stone so it is a nice contrast.
The loose stones are a creamy colour, it comes from Leitrim and it took 26 tons to cover the area. We use nice low growing plants and scented plants around the patio area so when youâre sitting out there you get a nice scent.
At the back of the house is a road, and before we started there was a poor quality hedge that the children could get through. That was a safety concern so we used fencing from the garden centre to create a solid structure around the garden that is secure for children, and also minimises the sound from the road.
This garden took three weeks to create from start to finish. It is 600 sq metres so it was unusually large.
